Illegal Cellphones Worth R5.5 Million And Cash Found Stashed In Ceiling At China Mall

In a recent operation, the Hawks, in conjunction with the Metro Police K9 unit, seized unregulated cellphones valued at R5.5 million and R500,000 in cash from a shop at the China Mall in Fordsburg, Johannesburg.

Acting on intelligence, the Hawks discovered the items concealed in the ceiling.

Two Pakistani nationals were arrested in connection with the seizure. According to Hawks Spokesperson Capt Lloyd Ramovha, the suspects were apprehended following the discovery of the unregistered cellphones.

Both appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, July 26, and their case was adjourned until next Tuesday for a bail application.

The two suspects have been charged under the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) Act and Label Regulations Act.

Ramovha also mentioned that additional charges may be explored as the investigation continues. The unregulated cellphones were not registered under ICASA regulations, further complicating the legal case against the suspects.

This seizure highlights the ongoing efforts of the Hawks and other enforcement agencies to clamp down on illegal activities involving unregulated electronics and significant amounts of cash.
