Grade R Teacher Shot Dead In Front Of Her Learners

The community of Phikiswayo Primary School in Richmond Farm, Ntuzuma, north of Durban, is grappling with the shocking and brutal murder of a dedicated teacher.

Grade R teacher, Dudu Khumalo, 46, was tragically shot dead by two unknown gunmen on Monday, in full view of her pupils and colleagues. Principal Mthokozisi Mchunu reflected on the horrifying incident, expressing his deep sorrow and disbelief.

“I’m out of words. Seeing her body, gunned down inside the school premises. Five bullets on a young woman, an educator,” Mchunu said.

Principal Mthokozisi Mchunu hopes for swift justice for Khumalo’s family and the school community. “One believes the law will take its course because this is not acceptable, we cannot live like this.”

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda stated, “Two unknown suspects fired several shots at the victim before fleeing. The woman was declared dead at the scene.”

According to reports, the suspects approached Khumalo in the staff room. She attempted to escape but tragically collapsed and died in the corridor.

The principal described the incident as deeply traumatic for both the staff and students. “When you look at these institutions, you tell yourself these are places of safety. That’s why we can’t understand this,” Mchunu remarked.

Classes were suspended and are set to resume on Tuesday, with a support team from the department expected to assist the traumatized learners. Mchunu expressed gratitude towards the community for their swift response and assistance following the incident.

Dudu Khumalo had been part of Phikiswayo Primary School since 2020 and was known for her hard work and enthusiasm. She was actively involved in social programs, particularly those focusing on orphans and vulnerable children.

“She was heading a portfolio of orphans and vulnerable children when we were celebrating Nelson Mandela Day. We did a number of programs cleaning up the area around the community,” Mchunu recounted.

The motive for the attack remains unknown as Khumalo had not indicated that her life was in danger. School governing body chair Trevor Mbazo labelled the shooting as a “sad incident” that left parents “shocked and concerned.”
