Godongwana Responds To MK, Pinpoints Zuma For South Africa’s Financial Crisis

In a recent parliamentary debate, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana vehemently responded to criticisms from the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.

The debate, which centred around the treasury’s budget, saw Godongwana attributing South Africa’s financial woes to former President Jacob Zuma and the era of state capture.

Godongwana did not hold back in his critique, pointing out that the billions allocated to failing state-owned enterprises during Zuma’s tenure are a significant reason behind the country’s escalating debt.

He countered MK MP Des van Rooyen’s accusations by highlighting the financial mismanagement that occurred under Zuma’s leadership. Godongwana stated, “What happened, which members of the MK party can’t accept, is that state capture crept in, led by their president.”

Godongwana provided a detailed breakdown of the financial diversions that took place during the state capture years.

He revealed that state-owned enterprises received R520 billion in bailouts, funds that were diverted from crucial sectors such as police, health, education, and the army.

The finance minister emphasized the stark reality that the country’s debt would be significantly lower if not for these misappropriations.

The MK party has criticized the government for its inability to provide free education and address the high unemployment rate among black graduates.

However, Enoch Godongwana reminded them of the financial constraints imposed due to the misallocation of funds during the state capture period. He argued that the financial resources squandered then could have been used to address these pressing social issues.

Van Rooyen also alleged that former senior treasury officials were colluding with white-owned businesses, evidenced by their current employment.

However, Godongwana’s focus remained on the broader financial mismanagement under Zuma’s leadership, which he believes is the root cause of the current economic crisis.
