“Three of the deceased were in the SUV, while the driver of the LDV also died,” Mmusi stated. The precise cause of the crash remains unclear, but preliminary investigations suggest that dangerous overtaking may have been a factor.

The aftermath of the collision led to the temporary closure of the R40 road. Traffic was initially managed on a stop-and-go basis to facilitate the retrieval of the bodies.

“The road was closed for a short while on the stop-and-go basis, but as the bodies were retrieved, the road had to be temporarily closed,” Mmusi explained. The road has since been reopened for traffic.
