Former Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa Resigns Amid Corruption Allegations

The African National Congress (ANC) has announced the resignation of Zizi Kodwa, the former sports minister and spokesperson for the ANC, from his role as a Member of Parliament (MP).

This decision comes amid serious allegations of corruption, marking a significant development in South Africa’s political landscape.

On Thursday, Kodwa formally communicated his resignation as an MP to the ANC through a letter dated July 24, 2024. The letter, which was received by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, stated that the resignation was effective immediately.

The ANC’s national spokesperson, Zuko Godlimpi, confirmed that the party has accepted Kodwa’s resignation and extended their best wishes for his future endeavours.

In June, Zizi Kodwa appeared before the Palm Ridge Specialized Commercial Crime Court to face corruption charges involving R1.7 million.

 

He was granted bail of R30,000 and subsequently resigned from his ministerial position. The case has been rescheduled for August 21, following his court appearance earlier this week.

Kodwa’s continued presence in parliament had drawn criticism, with some accusing the ANC of double standards in implementing its step-aside policy.

This policy dictates that members facing charges should not represent the party while their cases are ongoing. Critics pointed out that other political figures, such as Ace Magashule, were removed from office under the same policy, suggesting inconsistency in its application.
