Preggy Padayachee, the uncle of disgraced former senior Crime Intelligence head Major-General Feroz Khan, has been shot dead in Ekurhuleni. Padayachee was killed on the R21 near Griffiths Road on Monday evening, 5 October 2026, in a shooting believed to have been a targeted attack. A friend who arrived at the scene to assist with a vehicle reportedly sustained a gunshot wound.

Feroz Khan’s Uncle Killed In R21 Shooting

Police have opened cases of murder and attempted murder following the R21 shooting involving Feroz Khan’s uncle. SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the incident happened on the road towards OR Tambo International Airport on Monday evening. Investigators are now working to establish what led to the attack and identify those behind it.

Nevhuhulwi said a driver travelling in a Fiat apparently experienced a breakdown and contacted a friend for help. The friend arrived with two other people, and the group was attending to the vehicle when gunfire erupted. The driver tried to escape the shooting but lost control before the vehicle crashed into a jersey barrier.

The R21 shooting proved fatal for the driver, who suffered critical injuries and was declared dead at the scene. One of the passengers was struck by a bullet and taken to hospital for treatment. The third occupant managed to flee without sustaining injuries, police said.

Feroz Khan Shooting Link Raises Questions

The killing of Feroz Khan’s uncle comes months after Padayachee spoke publicly following the shooting of Khan in May. He also addressed the media after Khan was arrested and had previously expressed anger over the attack on his nephew. At the time, Padayachee said those responsible should face consequences.

“Whoever did must pay for it,” he said.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the Feroz Khan family shooting, and nobody has been arrested so far. Nevhuhulwi said detectives were continuing with their investigation into the circumstances of the attack. Authorities are also working to establish who was responsible for the shooting.

Feroz Khan Set To Appear Before Madlanga Commission

Padayachee’s death comes as Feroz Khan is scheduled to appear before the Mbuyiseli Madlanga-led commission of inquiry. Parts of Khan’s evidence are expected to be heard in a closed session on 6 October, after the commission restricted attendance to commissioners, evidence leaders and Khan’s legal team. The decision followed concerns surrounding evidence previously presented in his absence.

Khan’s appearance before the Madlanga Commission follows several delays and disputes over whether he would participate. He did not attend proceedings on 28 September despite being given the option of testifying virtually after an independent medical assessment. Commission chair Madlanga subsequently rejected a request for another postponement, finding that Khan had failed to comply with a valid subpoena and indicating that criminal charges should be pursued over his absence.

Feroz Khan Faces Allegations In Madlanga Inquiry

The Feroz Khan inquiry has included allegations concerning his alleged links to businessmen associated with tobacco company Carnilinx, former anti-corruption head Andrea Johnson and alleged cartel figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. MK party MP Vusi Shongwe has separately alleged that he was offered millions of rand to stop investigating Khan. Khan has denied or disputed various allegations before the commission.

The developments follow Khan’s dismissal from SAPS as deputy head of Crime Intelligence after disciplinary proceedings. He is expected to challenge the dismissal and remains out on R20,000 bail in a separate corruption-related case. Meanwhile, police investigations into the R21 shooting remain under way.
