Netflix South Africa has officially announced the renewal of the popular series ‘Blood & Water’ for a highly-anticipated fourth season. Production is already underway, hinting at a potential release in 2024.

Since its debut on Netflix in May 2020, ‘Blood & Water’ has become one of the streaming platform’s notable original productions from South Africa, following the success of ‘Queen Sono’.

While predominantly in English, the show showcases various dialects, including Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, SeSotho, Shona, and Tswana.

The teen drama has consistently released new seasons each year, with the second season arriving in 2021 and the most recent season premiering in November 2022.

Netflix South Africa’s official Twitter account unveiled a class photo teasing a fresh term, new students, and undoubtedly, new drama.

The ensemble cast for the upcoming season includes Ama Qamata, Kho’si, Dillon Windvogel, Mekaila Mathys, Leroy Siyafa, Katishcka Kiara, Arno Greeff, Tumisho Masha, Greteli Fincham, Meggan Lee Johnstone, Natasha Thahane, and Khosi Ngema.

This marks a significant milestone for a South African series, as ‘Blood & Water’ becomes the first to surpass three seasons on Netflix. Currently, the show is on par with ‘How to Ruin Christmas’, both boasting three successful seasons.

Rumors of the season renewal initially surfaced in late March 2023 when sources revealed that the show was in the contract signing phase, with production potentially commencing in May.

While ‘Blood & Water’ has primarily captured a devoted audience within its home country, it gained international recognition when the third season made its way to the top 10 lists on Netflix in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Season 3 even secured a spot in the global top 10 rankings for a week, accumulating 12.69 million hours watched.

According to FlixPatrol, the series has appeared in the South African top 10s for a total of 106 days, with significant viewership in countries like Nigeria and Jamaica.
