According to a report in City Press, Robert “Kicks” Varrie was declared dead after being interrogated during the filming of Sizokuthola and then dropped off at the Thelle Mogoerane regional hospital in Vosloorus last week. The incident prompted the opening of a murder case against Khumalo and the matter is still under investigation.

The Xolani Khumalo Foundation, however, has stated that Khumalo and his team acted in line with the law during the operation. They maintained that they operated with the strictest standard of professionalism in their mission to secure accountability from those selling drugs and causing harm to communities.

In response to the ongoing investigation and the charges against Khumalo, the Xolani Khumalo Foundation, along with other organizations including the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), presented a memorandum of demands to Lt-Col Duncan Scott. One of their key demands is for the government to amend the Criminal Procedure Act to allow any private person to arrest a suspect without a warrant.
