DJ Maphorisa, real name Themba Sekowe, is now free after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) withdrew assault charges laid by his girlfriend Thuli Phongolo.
The Amapiano producer was arrested in May after allegedly beating the actress, and he was released on R4 000 bail.

“It is alleged that on Sunday, 7 May 2023, the accused (Sekowe) assaulted his girlfriend, Thulisile Phongolo by hitting her with open hands and strangled her after she confronted him about an incident that happened the previous night where he was booked to perform.
“The complainant laid a charge with Sandton South African Police Service (SAPS), who acted promptly and arrested the accused,” read the NPA statement.
He has appeared in court four times since then. Thuli withdrew the case after his first appearance, but the NPA pursued it. Thuli filed a withdrawal statement and appeared in court, where she agreed to the accused’s release on bail.

Following the fourth court appearance, the case was dismissed. According to NPA spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane, the matter was withdrawn after Maphorisa’s team successfully made representations with the Director of Public Prosecutions.
