Bongo Maffin has existed for over 25 years, having originally appeared on the music world in 1998 with their first project, ‘The Concerto’ which was largely sucessful.
Thandiswa Mazwai, Anesu “Jah Seed” Mupemi, Stoan Seate, and Speedy made a comeback in 2019 and released their most recent EP, From Bongo with Love.
But, they quickly went on to pursue independent careers. Their previous endeavour, New Construction in 2005, did not include member Harold “Speedy” Matlhaku.
Announcing at the time, Thandiswa informed fans, “It’s something we want to give the fans. As we got into making the album, we realised that this is actually the gift we can give our fans.”
“We’ve let the ground get fertile and recover again. If we hadn’t gone through those 14 years, I don’t know if we’d be sitting here talking about another album. A lot of energy has been re-gathered, that ground has had time to recover, and I think it’s fertile again to start hammering it,” Stoan said.
Speedy took to social media to share that it has been his work behind the scenes that kept the group together.
“It’s so much silent hard work that I have to keep putting in behind the scenes in order for this group to keep functioning. And nobody will ever know about it. But, I just have to keep doing it without any applause or recognition, and keep going #Bongomaffin #Keepitmoving …exit Egos enter humbleness,” he says.

Speedy left the group a few years ago, but returned after learning a few things while pursuing his solo career. Some suspected Speedy and his bandmate Stoan were feuding, but it didn’t turn out to be so.
Stoan said, “Speedy made the decision to leave Bongo Maffin but he has learned his lesson. He has been working hard because he doesn’t want to be in the same situation again, but we are cool.”
