Big Zulu, known as Siyabonga Johannes Nene offstage, had big plans for the event – Inkabi Nation Sunday Invasion – but it had to be postponed due to disappointing ticket sales.
The highly anticipated event was meant to feature renowned acts like Sjava, his hometown companion from Bergville, and popular Limpopo singer Makhadzi.
The event, which aimed to serve as the grand launch platform for Big Zulu and Nkabi Records artists, turned out to be a colossal flop following the Durban July festivities.

The Warehouse pub in Durban was set to host the extravaganza, with general tickets priced at R100 and VIP tickets at R300.
However, the event’s failure may have been influenced by the abundance of other popular gigs taking place immediately after the Durban July, such as Fact: Durban Rocks, Cotton Fest, Max’s Lifestyle, and Anywhere In Your City.
A source familiar with the situation revealed that Inkabi chose to “postpone” the event due to sluggish ticket sales, which didn’t meet their expectations.
The lineup, including artists from Inkabi Records like Lwa Ndlunkulu, award-winning Afro-Pop singer Mduduzi Ncube, Siya Ntuli, Xowla, and rapper Zakwe, was also seen as confusing for the Durban market.
One source commented, “Durban crowds are hard to please, and they may not connect with artists like Makhadzi as much as audiences in Gauteng and Limpopo do.
They still have a strong affinity for Gqom music, and perhaps mixing up the lineup could have appealed to them more.”

Another source pointed out that while the concept was good, the timing clashed with people’s plans centered around the Durban July and its associated pre-parties, rather than music concerts.
Despite attempts to obtain a comment from Inkabi Records, they remained unreachable.
