EFF Leader Julius Malema Convicted—Is The Party’s Future At Risk?

East London Magistrate’s Court found EFF leader Julius Malema guilty on five charges, including unlawful possession and discharging of a firearm in public. Sentencing has been postponed until early next year.

The maximum sentence for unlawful possession carries up to 15 years behind bars. Malema’s former bodyguard, Adriaan Snyman, was acquitted on two charges.

Outside the court, Malema addressed supporters: “As a revolutionary, going to prison or death is a badge of honour. We cannot be scared of prison, we cannot be scared to die for the revolution.”

Political analysts are suggesting that the conviction could have serious repercussions for Malema’s political future.

The question now is what the nature of the sentence is going to be and how it will affect his political career. Will Malema survive this hit, mostly, if there is a jail sentence, or will this be the last bit for his political career?

Some political voices are saying that the EFF could be impacted as the party has largely been built around Malema’s persona. There would have been hope if the other strong EFF leaders that left the party were still around.

Legal Battles Ahead and Political Momentum Questions

Despite the conviction, Malema has vowed to challenge the judgement up to the Constitutional Court. He is expected to pursue all legal avenues to overturn the ruling and maybe do the ANC-type Stalingrad strategy.

Political analyst Ntsikelelo Breakfast highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the ruling’s political fallout. “It’s too early to predict the implications of the court’s decision. There are many possibilities, and the Constitutional Court is the final arbiter over all matters of the law. If Zuma can be sent to prison, who is Julius Malema?”

Breakfast echoed concerns about the EFF’s dependence on Malema’s image. “The party is built on his image, and if things take a turn for the worse, it will put the party on the back foot,” he said.

Malema Claims Political Targeting, Analysts Warn of Societal Division

Malema questioned aspects of the magistrate’s judgment, particularly why Snyman was acquitted while he was found guilty. “By releasing accused number two, the whole case should have collapsed. But the racist was looking for me,” he said, accusing the prosecution of targeting him for political reasons.

He also urged supporters to act against corruption: “South Africa has been sold to criminals and criminal cartels, and this country must be rescued,” Malema said, referencing information shared at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Political analyst Rene Oosthuizen warned that the verdict could intensify existing societal divisions. “Given our country’s history of inequality and political tension, this high-profile judgment risks becoming a symbol of wider social and political conflict rather than a step towards justice and accountability,” she said.

Oosthuizen urged reflection: “Will this verdict serve to unite us, or will it drive us further apart?”
