Dis-Chem Under Pressure For Lack Of Black Representation In Executive Management

Dis-Chem’s leadership is currently under immense pressure from shareholders due to the absence of black representation at the executive management level.

This issue was prominently brought to attention during the company’s annual general meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, where shareholders questioned the slow pace of transformation.

During the AGM, a shareholder directly addressed the inadequacy of racial diversity at Dis-Chem, highlighting that the company has zero percent representation of black individuals at top management levels and only 14.2% in senior management.

The shareholder sought an explanation from the leadership regarding this slow progress in achieving racial transformation at critical management positions.

Dis-Chem’s CEO Rui Morais responded, attributing the lack of diversity to historically low turnover at the executive committee (Exco) level.

According to Morais, the long tenure of senior management staff has made it challenging to introduce people of colour into these positions. Nevertheless, Morais assured shareholders that Dis-Chem is making substantial efforts to prioritize transformation at the executive level.

Morais emphasized, “As we think about diversity targets if the opportunity presents itself to the group, the transformation will be pushed as an agenda item. That’s how we structure the employment equity targets for executive management and throughout the management levels.”

This is not the first time Dis-Chem has faced scrutiny over its diversity policies. In 2022, a leaked internal memo from the company’s founder and then-CEO Ivan Saltzman called for a moratorium on hiring white managers to improve the company’s employment equity and transformation objectives.

This memo sparked outrage on both sides, with some white individuals feeling targeted and some black individuals offended by the terminology used.

The Dis-Chem board later issued an apology for the inappropriate tone of the memo. Nonetheless, the incident has continued to cast a long shadow over the company’s diversity practices.

Dis-Chem’s leadership plans to address these concerns by pushing diversity and transformation agendas more aggressively. However, the company still faces significant challenges in aligning its managerial demographics with its broader socio-economic responsibilities.
