Convicted Killer Thabo Bester Changes Lawyers Again In Prison Escape Case

Convicted killer and rapist, Thabo Bester, has once again instructed new lawyers in his prison escape case.

Bester, along with his accomplice, disgraced doctor Nandipha Magudumana, and their co-accused, appeared before the High Court in Bloemfontein on Wednesday. They are facing charges related to Bester’s 2022 prison break from the Mangaung Correctional Facility.

Bester and Magudumana were apprehended in April last year in Tanzania while on the run. In a busy day at the Bloemfontein High Court, Bester, Magudumana, and their seven co-accused took their places in the dock.

Magudumana walked past Bester, taking the number one spot in the dock, and shared a lengthy hug with her father, Zolile Sekeleni, who is also an accused in the case.

During the proceedings, several of the accused changed their legal representatives, including Bester, who is now on his fourth lawyer since his arrest.

Prosecutor Amanda Bester addressed the court regarding these developments, stating, “For accused number seven, there were two lawyers involved – Mr Jan Loubscher and Mr Mathee. Both of them filed notices regarding their withdrawal.”

Originally, a pre-trial hearing was scheduled to proceed on Wednesday, but it has now been postponed to 5 June due to the changes made by the accused. This latest development highlights the complexities and challenges faced by the legal teams involved in this high-profile case.

As the legal process continues, it remains to be seen how these changes in legal representation will impact the proceedings and the outcome of the case. The court will reconvene in June to further assess the situation and determine the next steps in the trial.
