Community Demands Justice For 14-Year-Old Girl Killed In Taxi Hit-And-Run

The sudden and tragic loss of 14-year-old Michayla Seqapotsa has left the local community in shock. Michayla was walking to a nearby shisanyama when she was struck by a speeding taxi in Berg Street, Capricorn, on a Sunday evening around 8pm.

According to her aunt, Nancy Makaye, Michayla was already deceased when family members arrived at the scene, where ambulances were present, but the taxi driver had fled.

Family’s Pursuit of Justice

The Seqapotsa family is now demanding justice. Nancy recounted the harrowing moment she learned of the incident, stating, “It was around 8 pm when my brother called me and told me what had happened.”

The family’s anguish is compounded by the fact that the driver, who reportedly handed himself over to the authorities, was initially arrested but subsequently released.

Nancy expressed her determination, saying, “We want him behind bars now.” Michayla was known to be a respectful, reliable, and humble girl, with much to look forward to, including her upcoming prom.

Responses from the Taxi Associations

In the wake of this incident, representatives from the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODTA) visited Michayla’s family to express their condolences.

They announced their intention to support the victims’ families, stating, “We will ensure help is properly served.” They also acknowledged the inappropriate behaviour of some drivers, promising ongoing efforts to address these emerging issues and improve community safety.

Police investigations into the culpable homicide case continue, with authorities urging eyewitnesses to come forward.
