Cleveland Shootout: Suspect Killed, 10 Arrested As Police Recover Nine Guns

A suspected criminal was shot and killed while 10 others were arrested after a shootout with police in Cleveland, Johannesburg.

The confrontation happened on Tuesday night after officers reportedly spotted a suspicious vehicle equipped with blue lights and a siren during a patrol.

Police subsequently recovered nine firearms at the scene following the exchange of gunfire.

Cleveland Shootout Erupts After Police Spot Suspicious Vehicle

According to police, officers became suspicious when they noticed the vehicle fitted with blue lights and a siren.

The officers attempted to approach and intercept the vehicle, but police said the driver repeatedly stopped whenever officers came closer before speeding away.

The vehicle was eventually intercepted, but the situation reportedly escalated when three suspects allegedly jumped out and opened fire at the police.

Officers returned fire, resulting in a shootout.

One Suspect Shot Dead As Two Flee

Police spokesperson Tinntswalo Sibeko said three suspects fled from the vehicle after the confrontation began.

Two allegedly escaped on foot, while the third was shot and killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Police then arrested 10 other suspects in connection with the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and the allegations against the suspects will be tested through the legal process.

Nine firearms were recovered by police following the Cleveland shootout.
