West Gang Suspect ‘Sniper’ Killed In Police Shootout In Inanda

A suspected West Gang member known as “Sniper” was fatally wounded during a crime intelligence-led operation in Mzomusha, Inanda.

A suspected West Gang member known as “Sniper” has been shot and killed during a confrontation with police in Mzomusha, Inanda.

The man was reportedly linked to several serious cases, including murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and kidnapping. The operation took place on Wednesday evening, 16 September 2026, after police intelligence indicated that the wanted suspect was at a property on Ndimande Road in Newtown C.

‘Sniper’ Killed During Inanda Police Operation

Members of the Inanda SAPS Task Team, assisted by SA Tactical Enforcement, reportedly tracked the suspect to a back room at the property.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said officers found five men at the house before identifying themselves and requesting to search them. One of the men allegedly ran into the house, where shots were fired during the ensuing confrontation.

“Police operationalised the information, and when they arrived at the house, they found five men and introduced themselves as police officers. Upon requesting to search the five men, one of them ran inside a house and shots were fired. During the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was shot and fatally wounded.”

Police said the suspect allegedly attempted to shoot at officers during the operation, but no police members were injured.

West Gang Suspect Linked To Viral Shooting Video

Preliminary investigations have allegedly identified the deceased as a feared member of the West Gang.

Netshiunda said the man was among a group of young men seen firing guns in a recent viral video that was reportedly recorded in KwaMashu.

“He was among the young men who were seen firing guns in a recent viral video, which was presumably recorded in KwaMashu,” Netshiunda said.

Police said the suspect was also wanted in connection with multiple violent crimes, including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and armed robberies.

Firearm And Kidnapping Victim’s Phone Recovered

The operation also resulted in the recovery of a firearm and an iPhone allegedly taken from a kidnapping victim.

Police said the same team had rescued three kidnapping victims in Mzomusha last month following a ransom demand. The latest recovery is expected to form part of the ongoing investigation into kidnapping and other violent crimes in the area.

A case of attempted murder of police officers has been opened following the shootout. Investigations into the suspect's alleged criminal activities and possible links to other cases are continuing.
