National Commissioner for the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Makgothi Thobakgale, has lauded the success of a recent raid at Durban’s Westville Correctional Centre.
On Thursday night, a coordinated effort by over 200 officers, including DCS officials and specialized police units, led to the recovery of various contraband items in the facility’s Medium B section.
Items such as cellphones, drugs, routers, money, television sets, and radios were confiscated during this operation.
Addressing the media during the raid, Thobakgale emphasized the department’s ongoing commitment to maintaining security and order within correctional facilities. “These raids happen at intervals.
As we are searching here, there are searches in other regions. In some instances, we invite the media so we can send a message to people out there that we continue to do this work,” stated the Commissioner.
During the raid, items such as a television set were found without the necessary permits, leading to their confiscation. The commissioner noted the importance of investigating how these items were smuggled into the facility, with officers set to commence thorough investigations on Friday.
Thobakgale also highlighted that contraband possession results in additional notations on an inmate’s profile, thereby affecting their overall record.
This recent raid follows a series of similar operations at various correctional facilities. Just days earlier, a raid at Johannesburg’s correctional centre, dubbed ‘Sun City’, led to the seizure of cellphones and other prohibited items.
Additionally, last month, a raid at the Goodwood Correctional Facility in Cape Town yielded similar contraband seizures.
The dedication of the DCS and their continued vigilance through these raids underscores their resolute stance against illicit activities within correctional facilities.
