Cato Manor Police Officer Arrested Over Stolen Bank Cards Linked To Hijackings

Constable Joshua Minenhle Makhaye, 27, attached to the Cato Manor Visible Policing Unit, is facing serious charges as stolen bank cards found in his possession are linked to at least four courier vehicle hijackings.

This alarming revelation was made by prosecutor Calvin Govender during Makhaye’s second appearance in Durban Magistrate’s Court.

Details of the Charges

Authorities note that Makhaye was apprehended when he was discovered with one of the bank cards that had been stolen during a tragic hijacking incident. This particular event led to the unfortunate death of 11-year-old Zara Ramsamy, who was struck by a fleeing vehicle.

Evidence suggests that Makhaye utilized a stolen FNB debit card belonging to Zara’s mother to make purchases amounting to R1,000 at a local liquor store.

In total, police found 105 bank cards from various banks, including ABSA and African Bank, in his possession. Additionally, a number plate falsely belonging to another vehicle was seized.

Legal Proceedings and Implications

Makhaye faces multiple charges including possession of suspected stolen property, theft, fraud, and obstructing justice. The case is expected to include amended charges under criminal law legislation as the investigation unfolds.

Due to the absence of a bank investigator who was to trace the origins of the seized cards, the state’s plans for a bail consideration were temporarily halted. The court proceedings are scheduled to resume on October 22, allowing Makhaye’s defense the opportunity to formally present their case.
