Microsoft Shares Reach All-Time High After Hiring OpenAI Co-Founders

Analysts are optimistic about the impact of this hiring decision, stating that they do not foresee any negative effects on the OpenAI-Microsoft relationship. They also expressed confidence in Altman's new role at the Windows software maker.

Microsoft Corp. experienced a significant surge in its shares, reaching an all-time high, following the announcement of the company’s recruitment of OpenAI co-founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, to lead its new in-house advanced artificial intelligence research team.

This positive news came after a slight dip in Microsoft’s shares on Friday when Altman unexpectedly departed from the creator of ChatGPT. However, the shares rebounded on Monday, closing at a record high after a 2.1% increase.

Analysts are optimistic about the impact of this hiring decision, stating that they do not foresee any negative effects on the OpenAI-Microsoft relationship. They also expressed confidence in Altman’s new role at the Windows software maker.

In a note, Evercore ISI analyst Kirk Materne described this move as a “clear win” for Microsoft, adding that it should help alleviate concerns about potential near-term uncertainty at OpenAI.

Meanwhile, the OpenAI board appointed Emmett Shear, the former CEO of Twitch, to replace Altman, despite calls from investors to reinstate the ousted chief.

Wired reported that approximately 500 OpenAI employees threatened to leave the startup and join Altman at Microsoft unless the board resigns and reinstates him as CEO.

Materne believes that while there may be some “brain drain” at OpenAI, the overall risk to Microsoft is largely contained as long as Altman and his team are on board.
