Another Drug Bust At OR Tambo Airport As Cocaine Worth R25m Found In Bag

The troubling trend of drug smuggling at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg continues to escalate. A recent incident has highlighted the persistent issue of narcotics trafficking into South Africa.

On Friday, law enforcement officials announced the discovery of a bag containing R25 million worth of cocaine. The bag, which originated from São Paulo, Brazil, was located on a carousel at the airport, according to South African National Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.

Joint Operations and Ongoing Investigations

The cocaine seizure was made during a coordinated effort involving Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the South African Revenue Service (SARS), and local police authorities.

Despite the success of this operation, officials reported that no arrests have yet been made, and investigations are currently ongoing. A video released by Mathe depicted over 40 bricks of cocaine collected from the scene, signalling the scale of the trafficking operation.

Arrests of Drug Mules in Recent Months

This cocaine bust is not isolated; it follows the recent apprehension of 14 suspected drug mules at the same airport within a mere two months. The most recent arrest occurred on a Sunday, involving a 43-year-old Paraguayan man who was found with over 100 drug packets, or ‘bullets,’ concealed within his digestive system.

He had arrived on a flight from São Paulo and was apprehended shortly after landing. Medical examinations confirmed the man’s possession of multiple foreign objects, raising alarms about the lengths traffickers will go to smuggle illicit substances.

Notable Incidents of Drug Smuggling

In September, authorities arrested two women—one from South Africa and the other from Namibia—who had also attempted to smuggle drugs internally. They were found with 110 and 60 drug packets, respectively. Both had arrived from São Paulo.

Additionally, earlier in October, two Dutch nationals were caught trying to smuggle 80kg of khat through OR Tambo Airport. This recent spike in drug-related activities emphasizes the ongoing struggle faced by airport and law enforcement officials in combating drug smuggling operations.
