The recent discovery of an eight-year-old boy from Elsies River high on cocaine has raised serious concerns among crime fighters and community workers on the Cape Flats.
This alarming case was brought to light by Leonsdale Ward Councillor, Franchesca Walker, who has been actively involved in addressing the issue.

Last week, Councillor Walker was approached by the child’s worried grandmother, who reported her grandson missing. After an extensive search, community workers found the boy, only to discover he was under the influence of multiple drugs, including cocaine.
The child was taken to the Tehillah Centre, where he tested positive for four different drugs: mandrax, tik, heroin, and cocaine.
Sister Magda Kleyn, CEO of the Tehillah Centre, expressed her shock at the findings. The investigation revealed that children in Leonsdale and other areas are able to purchase cocaine for as little as R20.
This situation is not isolated, as similar trends have been observed across townships like Langa, where cheaper variants of cocaine are being sold.
This disturbing trend has become a significant concern for teachers and parents in the community. The ease with which children can obtain drugs has left many at their wits’ end.
Recent arrests by Metro Police and SAPS have highlighted the ongoing efforts to curb this dangerous trend. Officers have successfully apprehended several alleged cocaine dealers in different parts of the Mother City.
