ANC Leads National Election Count As DA Dominates Gauteng Metros And Retains Midvaal
With 90% of voting districts counted, the ANC remains ahead nationally, but the DA is leading in Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni as coalition politics continues to shape Gauteng's local government landscape.

The latest election results are highlighting a divided political landscape, with the African National Congress (ANC) leading nationally while the Democratic Alliance (DA) makes significant gains across Gauteng's major metropolitan municipalities. With 90% of voting districts captured, the ANC is sitting at 31% of the national vote. However, its national lead has not translated into dominance across Gauteng's biggest cities.
The DA is currently ahead in Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, signalling a different electoral picture in the province's metropolitan areas.
Meanwhile, the absence of outright majorities in several municipalities suggests that coalition negotiations will remain central to the formation of local governments. Political parties are increasingly having to prepare for a political environment in which governing through partnerships may become the norm.
Gauteng Election Results: DA Leads Johannesburg, Tshwane And Ekurhuleni
The DA is leading the race in all three of Gauteng's metropolitan municipalities as the counting process advances. Its performance in Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni contrasts with the ANC's position at the top of the national results table. The outcome could have significant implications for how the province's metropolitan councils are governed.

The coalition picture extends beyond the major cities, with no political party having secured an outright majority in Merafong, Mogale City or Rand West City. These municipalities are also facing the prospect of coalition arrangements to establish governing administrations. Emfuleni, however, remains at an earlier stage of the process, with only 10% of its voting districts captured.
Gauteng Municipal Elections: Coalition Governments Likely To Continue
The latest figures suggest that coalition governments will remain an important feature of Gauteng's political landscape. With several municipalities yet to produce a clear outright winner, parties may have to negotiate with other political formations to secure control of municipal councils. This could make post-election discussions just as important as the voting process itself.

Emfuleni's results are particularly difficult to assess at this stage because counting remains limited. With only a tenth of its voting districts captured, the final outcome is still uncertain. A more complete picture will emerge as election officials process the outstanding results.
Midvaal Election Results: DA Secures More Than 62% Majority
Midvaal stands apart from the rest of Gauteng, having emerged as the only municipality in the province where a party has secured an outright majority. The DA has retained control after obtaining more than 62% of the vote. Its performance means it can continue governing the municipality without depending on coalition partners.
Unlike Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, where coalition arrangements may be necessary, Midvaal offers the DA a clear path to governing independently. The municipality is currently the party's only outright majority stronghold in Gauteng based on the figures supplied. As counting continues elsewhere, attention will remain on whether any other party can secure a similar result.
