ActionSA Calls For Removal Of R200 Electricity Surcharge In Johannesburg

In a recent development, ActionSA has decided to partner with the African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg on a conditional basis.

This move comes with a significant demand: the repeal of the controversial R200 surcharge on prepaid electricity. At a media briefing on Monday morning, ActionSA announced that their cooperation with the ANC hinges on this crucial condition.

As of this month, Johannesburg households using prepaid electricity are required to pay an additional fixed fee of R200. This surcharge has been a point of contention, with many arguing that it places an undue financial burden on residents.

ActionSA, a party known for its critical stance against the ANC since its inception in 2020, has now taken a proactive step by engaging with the governing party to address this issue.

ActionSA’s collaboration with the ANC is not unconditional. Apart from the demand to revoke the R200 surcharge, the party has also called for the removal of Al Jama-ah’s Kabelo Gwamanda from the mayoral office.

ActionSA’s national chairperson, Michael Beaumont, stated that the party aims to use this opportunity to stabilize service delivery in Johannesburg. He emphasized the necessity of adapting to the political environment to effect change.

Despite entering into a conditional relationship with the ANC, ActionSA maintains its position as an opposition party in the metro. Beaumont highlighted that the party could not afford to stand by and watch Johannesburg decline.

He stressed the importance of being proactive and willing to collaborate with other political entities to bring about meaningful change in the city’s administration.
