Robert Jeffrey, a former businessman, stood on stage to receive his doctorate on Thursday.
This week, an 80-year-old student received a PhD in Engineering Management from the University of Johannesburg.

Robert Jeffrey, a former businessman, stood on stage to receive his diploma on Thursday.
Jeffrey admitted that he was both anxious and excited as he travelled with his family.
He was given a standing ovation by the in attendance audience as he was awarded his doctorate.
Jeffrey’s thesis was on “Assessing the actual costs of alternative electricity generating technologies in South Africa in line with its economic development.”
The wheelchair-bound grandpa of 8 wanted to start a project that would give him some direction. He had lost the use of his legs.
“It is necessary to have a purpose and I wanted a subject that would challenge me and would give a positive result for all South Africans especially the unemployed and poor,” he said.

“I am extremely proud and satisfied with the objectives I set to get this PhD. Education is about developing the entire country and benefiting, through economic growth, the poor and unemployed. A sound education is the most important benefit a parent can give their child.”
