In a recent incident that has highlighted the concerning issues of drug-related crime among youth, an 18-year-old male was arrested in Bohlokong, Free State, for alleged possession of illegal substances and a firearm.

The Arrest
On October 16, 2024, at approximately 4 pm, members of the Anti-Gang Unit, working within the Thabo Mofutsanyane district, received critical information from local residents regarding a young man suspected of drug dealing and possession of stolen goods. Acting on this information, the authorities swiftly responded and conducted a search at the suspect’s residence.
Seizure of Illegal Items
Upon conducting the search, officers discovered a staggering amount of illegal substances, including mandrax tablets valued at R400,000, along with crystal meth and dagga.

Additionally, a 9mm unlicensed handgun was uncovered, hidden within the vehicle’s dashboard. Alongside the firearm, several rounds of ammunition, smartphones, and cash were also confiscated, indicating a potentially extensive illegal operation.
Captain Lorraine Earle, spokesperson for the South African Police Services, remarked on the significance of community engagement in enabling swift police action.
The arrested individual is expected to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate Court shortly, facing serious charges that will be determined by the legal system. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and firearms-related crime in South Africa.
