An intoxicated policeman, who was filmed in a marked police vehicle, has been charged and will face an internal disciplinary hearing, according to Gauteng Police.
The investigation was initiated after the footage was shared on social media, stated SAPS spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as a constable attached to the Etwatwa Police Station. It was determined that the member was not authorized to drive the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Immediate action was taken, and the member has been criminally charged with various offences, including driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent, as well as reckless and negligent driving, added Masondo.
In addition to the criminal charges, a departmental case has also been opened against the member. Gauteng Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Tommy Mthombeni expressed gratitude towards community members who brought this mischievous behavior to the attention of the police management.
“Police resources, including police vehicles, are meant to serve the community and accelerate service delivery. The abuse and misuse of state resources will not be tolerated,” Mthombeni emphasized.
