In a commendable effort to combat illegal trade activities, the Limpopo police, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, have successfully apprehended several individuals involved in the possession and distribution of illicit cigarettes and drugs.
On Thursday, 15th February 2024, a series of well-planned and executed raids were carried out in the Waterberg District, targeting various suspects.

One operation conducted in Mookgophong involved the cooperation of Naboomspruit Police and the private security sector. Acting on a tip-off about a vehicle suspected of carrying illegal cigarettes, law enforcement intercepted the vehicle at a filling station.
Two suspects, aged 23 and 28, were found in possession of a significant quantity of illicit cigarettes, intended for distribution within local communities. Currently, the confiscated items are undergoing further examination, with an estimated market value of approximately R299,000.
In another incident in Bela-Bela, four male suspects were arrested for drug dealing during separate incidents. Three suspects were found in possession of 34 sachets of Nyaope drugs, while another suspect was found with 260 sachets of Nyaope, along with an undisclosed amount of money believed to be proceeds from drug dealing.

Lauding the arrests, Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, emphasised that such actions send a clear message that the illegal cigarette and drug trade will not be tolerated. The suspects will soon appear before the respective Magistrate’s Court to face the charges brought against them.
This crackdown on illegal trade activities demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement and relevant stakeholders to protect communities and ensure the safety and well-being of the public.
