Rea Vaya, the bus service operator in Johannesburg, has announced that its buses are now back in operation.
The services were temporarily suspended on Friday due to an unprotected strike by employees. In a statement, Rea Vaya expressed its apologies for the delay in starting the service and thanked passengers for their patience.
The business rescue practitioner of PioTrans, the company that operates Rea Vaya, had obtained an interdict against the striking employees. The interdict prohibits the employees from participating in an unlawful and unprotected strike.

The Labour Court has called upon the employees and unions to show cause why the interim order should not be made final.
PioTrans was placed under business rescue in December after facing financial difficulties. The company had outstanding debt, which led to creditors attempting to seize part of its fleet.
The business rescue practitioner, Mahier Tayob, stated that he would not hesitate to take legal action against any wrongdoers and seek to recover funds if there is evidence of impropriety.
Tayob also expressed concerns about the possibility of sabotage, stating that it cannot be ruled out as a potential threat. He emphasized that any criminal activities would be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible would be held accountable.
Rea Vaya’s resumption of services is a positive development for commuters who rely on the bus service for their daily transportation needs. The company will provide regular updates on the service to ensure passengers are informed of any changes or disruptions.
Despite the challenges faced by PioTrans, the business rescue process aims to stabilize the company’s operations and ensure its long-term viability. The successful resumption of Rea Vaya’s bus services is a step towards achieving this goal.
