7 Police Officers Arrested For Collecting ‘Protection Money’ From Chinese Owned Shops
The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen (Adv.) Themba Patekile, has condemned the involvement of South African Police Service (SAPS) members in extortion-related crimes that occurred over the weekend.
This serious issue, which dramatically undermines the integrity of the police force, has sparked outrage and necessitated swift action.

The Allegations Against SAPS Members
According to reports, seven members of the Public Order Police were arrested on Sunday, 06 October 2024, for allegedly extorting two shops owned by Chinese nationals in Milnerton.
It is alleged that the members, accompanied by a civilian suspect, unlawfully collected an undisclosed amount of cash from these establishments, purportedly as protection money. Such actions not only tarnish the reputation of the SAPS but also raise questions about the behavior of individuals in positions of authority.
Swift Actions Taken by the Authorities
Upon receiving reports of the incident, the Anti-Corruption Unit and the Detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit acted promptly to apprehend the suspects.
This decisive action reflects the commitment of Lt Gen Patekile to maintain high standards within the SAPS. The arrested officers, aged between 24 and 43, are expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 09 October 2024, to face the charges against them.
As the investigation continues, leads are being pursued to identify additional suspects who may have been involved in this unfortunate situation.
The Provincial Commissioner reasserts that offenders have no place in the SAPS and will face disciplinary actions in accordance with the SAPS regulations, reinforcing the notion that corruption will not be tolerated.
