Zuma-Sambudla Incitement Trial: Fraud Examiner Details Social Media Role In 2021 Unrest

The trial of Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, Member of Parliament and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party member, has entered its second and final week. Zuma-Sambudla faces charges of inciting terror and public violence related to the July 2021 unrest in South Africa.

On Monday, certified fraud examiner Sarah-Jane Trent returned to the witness stand to continue her testimony in the high-profile case. Trent also serves as the complainant in the matter.

Last week, proceedings were temporarily adjourned for two days to allow Trent time for consultation. She is now resuming her testimony, outlining how Zuma-Sambudla allegedly leveraged social media to incite the July 2021 riots.

Social Media Evidence Highlights Alleged Incitement

Trent walked the court through multiple social media posts attributed to Zuma-Sambudla, referencing screenshots as evidence. She testified that the accused’s Twitter account held significant influence, with more than 120,000 followers at the time of the alleged inciting tweets.

The witness also drew attention to a video visible in one of the post’s comment sections, which allegedly depicts an armed individual. Trent’s evidence centres on the role of Zuma-Sambudla’s online activity in escalating tensions during the unrest.
