Zuma Among Former Presidents Invited To Parliament Opening But Won’t Be Going

The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) chairperson, Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, announced that former presidents, including Jacob Zuma, have been invited to the opening of Parliament on Thursday.

This event marks a significant moment as President Cyril Ramaphosa addresses the Parliament, leading the seventh administration under the Government of National Unity (GNU).

Among the esteemed guests invited are former presidents Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe, as well as former Speaker Baleka Mbete, Deputy Presidents Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and David Mabuza.

Additionally, former speakers Thandi Modise and Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula have been extended invitations. Despite this, it appears unlikely that Jacob Zuma will attend.

Last month, Zuma instructed his party’s 58 MPs to boycott the first sitting of Parliament in protest against the election results of May 29. MK party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela stated that Zuma does not intend to attend the opening.

He remarked, “Can you imagine President Zuma going there and sitting across Ramaphosa, and [Ramaphosa] addressing him? The only bridge we need to cross is to see Ramaphosa resigning.”

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, indicated that the guest list would be finalized by Thursday at 1 PM. The opening ceremony will take place at Cape Town City Hall at 7 PM, with all preparations in place to welcome MPs and guests.

This event serves as a pivotal platform for President Ramaphosa to articulate the administration’s plans and long-term vision for the upcoming five-year term. It outlines the government’s strategic objectives and policy priorities and officially inaugurates the new parliamentary term.
