Watch| Zoo Lake Clubhouse Goes Up In Flames

Early morning joggers and residents were left stunned on Wednesday when the historic Zoo Lake clubhouse in Joburg went up in flames.

Thick smoke and blazing flames could be seen from a distance as firefighters rushed to the scene just before 7am.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said crews battled the inferno and later managed to bring it under control.

“We are busy with damping down operations to prevent flare-ups. Fire safety inspectors will launch an investigation once the site is safe,” said Khumalo.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown, but no injuries were reported.

Locals expressed shock, saying the much-loved spot, known for family outings and events, now stands in ruins.
