Zimbabwe’s NDWG Defends Job Sikhala, Claims Explosives Found In His Car Are Part Of ‘Foul Play’

The National Democratic Working Group (NDWG) in Zimbabwe has strongly refuted claims that explosives allegedly discovered in opposition politician Job “Wiwa” Sikhala’s vehicle in South Africa belonged to him.

The group described the incident as an apparent act of foul play aimed at discrediting the outspoken leader.

In a statement released this week, the NDWG said Sikhala — who was arrested in Pretoria earlier this week — was “subjected to what is believed to be suspected foul play” when members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) stopped and searched his vehicle.

“During the search, explosives were allegedly discovered in the vehicle. Honourable Sikhala was subsequently arrested and is currently detained at Pretoria Central Prison,” NDWG spokesperson Silenkosi Moyo said.

The organisation added that its legal representatives were “actively engaged on-site” to ensure Sikhala’s defence.

“We categorically maintain that the explosives found do not belong to him,” the statement continued. “As the National Democratic Working Group, we stand unwaveringly beside our leader and reaffirm our commitment to defending him through all legal means available.”

Arrest Sparks Concern Among Zimbabweans in the Diaspora

The NDWG called on supporters and the public to keep Sikhala in their thoughts and prayers during what it described as “challenging times.”

Sikhala’s arrest in South Africa comes less than a year after his release from prison in Zimbabwe, where he had been detained for allegedly inciting public violence.

Human rights groups and opposition members had previously accused the Harare government of persecuting the former MP for his political activism.

Known as one of the most outspoken critics of Zanu PF, Sikhala has consistently condemned corruption and human rights violations in Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, others within Zimbabwean society have accused the leader of criminal involvement and welcomed news of his detention in South Africa.
