Zanzou Nightclub Torture Case: Accused Released on Bail

A 41-year-old Congolese national, a former bouncer at the infamous Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria, has been released on R10,000 bail.

He was arrested in February 2025 in connection with the alleged torture of patrons at the nightclub.

The incident, involved a group of people being severely assaulted and tortured in a storeroom at the club.

Court Proceedings

The State had opposed bail, arguing that the accused was a flight risk due to the serious nature of the crimes and public anger surrounding the case.

However, the defense argued that he had a valid temporary asylum seeker permit, which was set to expire in July, and was not a flight risk.

The accused also pleaded for his release, citing family responsibilities.

The court ultimately granted bail, convinced that the accused would not abscond.

Investigation And Arrests

The accused faces 14 charges related to the alleged torture, with six victims coming forward so far.

The police are still searching for seven other suspects linked to the case.

The investigation began after disturbing videos of the incident circulated online, prompting nationwide outrage.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s Tactical Response Unit officers apprehended the suspect in Yeoville, Johannesburg, following a tip-off.
