Outrage As Young Children Filmed Drinking Alcohol ‘Because It’s Christmas’

Widespread outrage has erupted after a disturbing video surfaced on social media showing very young children allegedly drinking alcohol in the presence of adults.

The incident, which circulated widely on Sunday, has been strongly condemned by Eastern Cape Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta, who described it as unacceptable and dangerous.

Video Sparks Shock as Toddlers And Young Children Seen Holding Alcohol Bottles

In the viral video, children believed to be as young as three or four years old are seen holding a green bottle and sipping what appears to be alcohol while adults look on.

In one moment, a child is heard shyly questioning why they should not be drinking alcohol, saying it is Christmas.

The footage has triggered public anger and concern over the safety and wellbeing of the children involved.

MEC Condemns ‘Disturbing and Dangerous’ Behaviour

Fanta strongly criticised the incident, warning that it poses a serious threat to children’s health and development.

“The video highlights a disturbing trend that must be addressed with urgency. The safety and welfare of our children are paramount, and it is the responsibility of every adult to protect them from harmful influences,” Fanta said.

“Allowing children to consume alcohol undermines their development and exposes them to a myriad of dangers, including addiction, health issues, and potential legal repercussions. It is troubling to witness adults facilitating such behaviour, which sets a poor example and normalises dangerous actions.”

Social Workers Deployed as Investigation Gets Underway

In response to the video, Fanta confirmed that her department has mobilised social workers to investigate the incident.

She said the priority is to identify those involved and ensure the children are protected.

“We are committed to ensuring that those responsible for permitting or encouraging such behaviour are held accountable.”

The MEC appealed to the public to assist authorities.

“We call upon those who witnessed this incident or have information regarding where it took place to come forward. Your cooperation is vital in addressing this issue and preventing future occurrences. Reports can be made anonymously to the Department of Social Development or local authorities.”

Warning Against Underage Drinking

Fanta said the incident should serve as a wake-up call to adults.

“It is essential for adults to model positive behaviours and create a nurturing environment for the youth. Instead of exposing children to alcohol, we encourage families and communities to engage in healthy activities that promote well-being, education, and mutual respect.”
