A young adult has died after a large tree came crashing down onto several homes in the Makausi informal settlement during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Emergency services from the City of Ekurhuleni were called to the scene at around 02:29 following reports of people trapped beneath debris.

Rescue teams arrived to find multiple shacks severely damaged after the massive tree fell, trapping residents inside.

Firefighters from Primrose, Bedfordview and Edenvale stations worked together in a desperate effort to reach those trapped under the wreckage.

Two young adults were found pinned beneath a large branch. One regained consciousness after being pulled to safety, while the other succumbed to their injuries and was declared dead at the scene despite medical intervention.

Three Injured After Tree Falls On Shacks In Germiston

Three additional victims suffered minor injuries during the incident and were transported to hospital for further treatment.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
