XChat Messaging App Launch Date Revealed As Elon Musk’s X Expands Chat Features

X’s upcoming messaging platform, XChat, appears to be nearing release, with a listing now live on the App Store indicating an expected availability date of 17 April.

Despite sharing a name with an older IRC-based application from the early 2000s, this version of XChat is entirely different. It is designed specifically as a messaging service for users of X.

The platform’s owner, Elon Musk, first outlined plans for an upgraded direct messaging system in mid-2025.

In posts at the time, he said the new system would be encrypted and built on a “whole new architecture”. He also stated that all users would receive XChat by June last year, although that timeline has since shifted.

Rather than arriving as an upgrade to X’s existing direct messages, the platform is launching as a standalone application. The app will allow users to send messages to anyone on X, as well as make calls across multiple devices.

Security appears to be a central focus. The service is described as end-to-end encrypted and includes options to edit or delete messages for all participants in a conversation. Users will also be able to block screenshots and enable disappearing messages, with the option for chats to vanish within five minutes.

In addition, the new messaging app supports large-scale conversations, allowing group chats of up to 481 participants.

XChat App Store Listing And Pre-Order Details For iPhone And iPad

According to its App Store listing, XChat will not include advertisements and will not track users. The listing also confirms that Apple device users can pre-order the app now, enabling automatic download once it becomes available.

The move signals a broader shift in how X is approaching private communication, positioning its new app as a dedicated platform rather than a feature within the main app.
