X Rolls Out New ‘About This Account’ Feature To Boost Transparency And Tackle Bot

X has begun deploying a new profile feature designed to give users clearer insight into who they are interacting with on the platform.

The tool, called “About this account,” displays key details such as an account’s listed location, the number of username changes, the original join date and how the app was downloaded.

The rollout comes as the platform continues to grapple with rising concerns over bots and deceptive accounts, a challenge further complicated by AI-driven automation.

By offering greater visibility, X hopes users will be better positioned to determine whether an account appears legitimate or is potentially a bad actor.

The idea was first floated in October, when X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, confirmed the company would test the feature on his own profile and those of its staff. The intention, he said, was to allow people to “make a more informed decision” about the authenticity of an account.

X’s Transparency Push Gains Momentum

The feature has begun appearing for more users over the past few days. Some reported spotting it after Bier replied “Give me 72 hours” to a user urging Elon Musk to require location disclosures on profiles.

To view the information, users simply tap the “Joined” date on their profile via the web or mobile app.

This opens a page revealing when the account was created, its listed base location, username change history and where the app was downloaded from — such as the Google Play Store or the US App Store.

However, TechCrunch reported that the data was not yet visible on other people’s profiles at press time. This could signal a phased rollout allowing users to confirm the accuracy of their own details before the feature is enabled platform-wide.

Privacy Controls and Potential VPN Flags

X has also introduced an option allowing users to choose whether their country or broader region/continent is displayed — a setting originally intended for countries where free speech might carry risks. Surprisingly, even US users are able to toggle this preference, though country remains the default.

The setting can be found under Privacy and Safety → About your account within the X app.

Meanwhile, reverse engineers digging through app code discovered evidence that X is working on a separate warning label that may appear on profiles using a VPN. If launched, the notice would tell others the account’s “country or region may not be accurate.”

The social media platform has not commented publicly on the rollout, but Bier has responded jokingly to users reporting the update, implying the feature is steadily expanding.

Instagram and Facebook have offered similar transparency tools for years, making X the latest major platform to adopt an “About this account” approach.
