X Launches New ‘Chat’ Platform With Encrypted Messaging, Video Calling And More

X has begun rolling out its long-awaited Chat platform, a major upgrade that replaces the app’s standard direct messaging with a far more advanced system.

The revamped feature aims to match the capabilities offered by leading messaging apps, introducing voice and video calls, file sharing and the option to edit or delete sent messages.

The platform places a stronger emphasis on user privacy. Alongside end-to-end encryption, the Elon Musk platform has added screenshot notifications and enhanced controls designed to make conversations more secure.

Chat is now live on iOS and the web, with the company confirming that Android users will receive the update “coming soon”. The platform is also developing a voice memo tool that will allow people to exchange quick audio messages.

X Expands Encrypted Messaging Features

The company has spent several months teasing its new messaging overhaul. Earlier this year, it released an initial version of encrypted messages but later “paused” the feature in May due to unspecified issues.

According to an updated article on its help centre, the platform’s encryption system has now been improved. “Unlike before, group messages and media can now be encrypted,” the company states. However, it clarifies that metadata, including recipient details, is not encrypted.

The help centre also notes that the platform does not provide “protections against man-in-the-middle attacks.”

Company Acknowledges Security Limitations

In its explanation, the social media company says, “As a result, if someone—a malicious insider or the platform itself as a result of a compulsory legal process—were to compromise an encrypted conversation, neither the sender or receiver would know.”

Despite these limitations, the company says it is working on tools to help users verify the authenticity of encrypted chats, signalling further enhancements to come.
