X Has Blocked Users From Sharing Links To Signal

Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) has begun blocking users from sharing links to Signal.me, a URL used by the encrypted messaging service Signal.

The move, first reported by the blog Disruptions, prevents users from sending Signal.me links in direct messages, public posts, or profile pages. Federal employees have reportedly used Signal for secure communications, including whistleblowing on sensitive matters.

Users who attempt to share a Signal.me link receive error messages such as, “This request looks like it might be automated. To protect our users from spam and other malicious activity, we can’t complete this action right now.

Please try again later.” Another message states, “We can’t complete this request because X or our partners have identified this link as being potentially harmful.” Tech publication Engadget confirmed the block in independent testing.

Warning Labels Applied to Existing Links

For those trying to access existing Signal.me links on X, a warning message appears stating, “Warning: this link may be unsafe.

“The link you are trying to access has been identified by X or our partners as being potentially spammy or unsafe, in accordance with X’s URL Policy.” However, users are given the option to bypass the warning and proceed.

This action raises concerns about censorship and whether X is selectively targeting certain services under the guise of security. Signal, known for its strong encryption and privacy-first approach, has long been used by journalists, activists, and government employees seeking secure communication.

Musk’s Broader Crackdown on Federal Workers

This latest move comes as Musk aligns with President Trump in efforts to downsize the federal workforce.

Reports indicate that over 9,500 government employees were terminated on Friday, February 14, as part of a broader initiative through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The blocking of Signal.me links could be seen as another step in restricting communication channels used by federal employees.
