Woman Scammed Out Of 100 Bags Of Potatoes — Police Hunt Fraud Suspect Keagan Chetty

Reaction Unit South Africa is appealing to the public for help in finding Keagan Chetty, who is wanted for fraud under SAPS Verulam Crime Administration System (CAS) No. 135/10/2025.

The alert comes after a local businesswoman in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, fell victim to a scam involving a fraudulent potato sale earlier today (Tuesday).

The victim, who runs a seafood and takeaway business, reported the incident to RUSA after being deceived into paying for goods that were never delivered.

Businesswoman Defrauded of R5,000 in Fake Potato Deal

According to officers, the businesswoman received a phone call from Chetty, who offered to sell her bags of potatoes at R50 per pocket. To convince her of the deal’s authenticity, Chetty sent a picture of the potatoes.

After negotiating the terms, the woman agreed to purchase 100 pockets and stated she would make an EFT payment once the delivery arrived. Around 09:30 that morning, a truck arrived at her premises — and Chetty demanded immediate payment before unloading.

Trusting the transaction, the woman transferred R5,000 via African Bank. Immediately after receiving payment, Chetty allegedly instructed the driver to cancel the order and remove the potatoes, leaving the woman without her goods or refund.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Chetty orchestrated the entire transaction to secure the money fraudulently. A criminal case of fraud has since been opened and is currently under investigation.

Authorities are urging anyone with information on Chetty’s whereabouts to contact Reaction Unit South Africa or the Verulam SAPS.
