Woman Arrested At OR Tambo Airport After Allegedly Smuggling Drug Capsules Bound For Tokyo

A 23-year-old South African woman has been arrested on charges of drug trafficking after police allegedly found suspected drug-filled capsules concealed inside her body at OR Tambo International Airport.

The arrest was made on Friday, 26 June 2026, following an intelligence-led operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Border Police.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 June 2026.

Drug Mule Arrested At OR Tambo International Airport

According to SAPS, Border Police identified the suspect after receiving operational intelligence.

She was taken for a medical examination, where X-rays allegedly confirmed the presence of suspected drug-filled capsules inside her body.

Police said the woman had travelled on a domestic route before attempting to continue her journey on an international flight.

She was intercepted after returning to OR Tambo International Airport while preparing to board a direct flight to Tokyo.

Police Recover Suspected Drug Capsules

At the time of her arrest, the suspect had reportedly released 28 suspected drug-filled capsules.

Police said the recovery process remains ongoing under strict medical supervision.

The recovered capsules have been booked into the SAPS exhibit management system, where they will undergo forensic analysis to determine the type and street value of the suspected narcotics.

Suspect Due In Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court

The 23-year-old remains in police custody and is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on charges relating to dealing in drugs.

SAPS said it remains committed to disrupting transnational drug trafficking syndicates and preventing illegal drugs from entering or leaving South Africa through ports of entry.

Investigations into the case are continuing.
