WMACA Slams Teacher Iain Wares For ‘Convenient’ Memory Loss In Child Abuse Case

Child advocacy organisation Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) has accused alleged paedophile teacher Iain Wares of attempting to avoid accountability by insisting he cannot recall former pupils.

Wares, now 86, returned to the Wynberg Regional Court on Tuesday, where prosecutors continued cross-examining him in his ongoing sexual abuse case.

He stands accused of sexually abusing a former Rondebosch Boys’ Prep School pupil, identified only as Stephen, in 1988 while serving as a teacher.

Beyond the South African case, Wares faces a further 90 charges linked to the sexual and physical abuse of more than 60 boys in Scotland dating back fifty years.

Prosecutor Challenges Wares’s ‘Memory Loss’ Defence

WMACA rejected Wares’s claim that teaching an estimated 2,700 boys over his career makes it impossible to remember individual children, arguing it should not be used to excuse the allegations he faces.

WMACA’s Luke Lamprecht said the organisation was encouraged by the prosecutor’s firm questioning, highlighting what she described as the “convenient” inability of Wares to remember a pupil he allegedly knew for years.

Lamprecht added, “She then also put it to him that it’s very unlikely that the complainant was making up the complaint, as he does not want to be named, so it cannot be for fame. The other argument made was that he followed media reports.”

Long-Running Case Moves Toward Final Arguments

The high-profile case, which spans multiple decades and jurisdictions, is expected to reach a critical stage early next year. Closing arguments are scheduled for 19 February 2026.
