Wits University Urges Students To Provide Evidence In Alleged Rape Case Involving SRC Member

Wits University has announced that it cannot proceed with its investigation into an alleged rape incident involving a student until more evidence is provided.

The university’s statement comes after students staged demonstrations on Monday night, following reports that a newly elected student representative council (SRC) member allegedly raped another student.

The accused student has since been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry.

Addressing the protesters on Tuesday, Dean of Student Affairs Jerome September appealed to the campus community for assistance in gathering crucial information.

“We’re still waiting for the victim or victims to come forward, and I want to ask any student and every student who knows anything to please come forward,” September said.

September emphasised that the institution’s ability to move forward with disciplinary processes depends on the availability of sufficient evidence.

“We need the evidence, we need the statements, so that we are able to move beyond suspension, right. But we cannot move beyond suspension if we don’t have all the evidence,” he explained.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring student safety and upholding due process while urging those with relevant information to support the ongoing investigation.
