Witness Fears For Life In Johannesburg Prison Wardens Murder Trial, Seeks Protection

A pivotal witness in the trial of five Johannesburg prison wardens accused of murdering an inmate has told the court he is too afraid to testify without protection.

Siphelele Quvane appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court as the State’s first witness but halted proceedings by declaring that his life is in danger because of his role in the case.

The matter relates to the 2022 death of Dumisani Ngwenya, who was allegedly beaten to death by prison wardens inside Johannesburg Prison. The trial commenced this week, with Quvane expected to lead the State’s evidence.

Star Witness Alleges Intimidation by Prison Wardens

Quvane, regarded as the star witness after opening the case against the five accused, told the court he had reconsidered testifying due to ongoing intimidation.

Instead of delivering evidence on Tuesday, he said he has been subjected to physical and psychological abuse by fellow wardens since agreeing to testify.

Witness Protection Demand Halts Court Proceedings

Quvane issued a firm ultimatum to the court, stating that he would withdraw as a witness unless he is placed under witness protection.

“I am saying to this court I am victimised, intimidated, to a point where they hired someone to stab me inside the prison, so as I stand here I am a dead person.”

Following his statement, the court adjourned to consider how to proceed with the matter.
