The explosive claim was made before the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday, where the detective—referred to as Witness A—testified partially in-camera. He is a member of the task team investigating the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart.
During his testimony, the detective recounted receiving a call from the head of Organised Crime in South Africa, Richard Shibiri, shortly after the arrest of multi-millionaire Katiso “KT” Molefe in December.
Alleged Network of Business and Political Links
According to Witness A, Shibiri informed him that Molefe was part of a group of five individuals with mining interests in the North West. The group allegedly included businessman ZE Nxumalo, who resides in Sandton and is described as a close friend of Julius Malema.
“He told me that Molefe was part of a group of five individuals with interests in the North West. He also said another guy, whose known as ZE Nxumalo, who stays in Sandton. He said ZE is a close friend of Julius Malema who is a politician, who tends to be close to general [Shadrack] Sibiya,” Witness A told the inquiry.
The testimony is expected to form part of the Commission’s ongoing probe into alleged corruption and misconduct within South Africa’s law enforcement agencies and their links to political figures.
