Winnie Khumalo Passes Away At 51

South Africa has lost one of its most beloved and resilient stars, Winnie Khumalo, who passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the age of 51. Khumalo, celebrated for her remarkable contributions to music and television, died at her home following a short illness.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by her daughter, singer Rethabile Khumalo, who called media personality Sabelo “Ntombeningi” Sithole for help after finding her mother unresponsive.

Sithole, devastated by the loss, shared: “I rushed to her home, but it was too late. I’m distraught—I have lost a friend.”

A Life Marked by Triumphs and Trials

Khumalo’s career spanned decades, having first risen to fame as a teenager when she was discovered by the late Brenda Fassie. At just 15, Khumalo released her debut album, Hey Laitie, Tshina Tshina, produced by legendary music producer Sello Chicco Twala.

She went on to work with some of the biggest names in South African music, including Brothers of Peace (B.O.P.), Bongo Maffin, and DJ Cleo, and later transitioned into acting, with roles in popular TV shows like Muvhango and Mponeng.

Winnie Khumalo’s Legacy

In addition to her music, Khumalo’s contributions to the entertainment industry were recognised through nominations for major awards. Her 2008 album I Just Wanna Live My Life was a significant comeback, earning nods at the Channel O Music Awards and the South African Music Awards (SAMAs).

Her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, followed in her footsteps, carving out her own music career. Despite challenges, including surviving an alleged poisoning incident in 2024, Rethabile has carried on her mother’s legacy of resilience and talent.
