Windows 10 Support Ends On October 14: Here’s How To Get An Extra Year For Free

After nearly a decade, Microsoft is officially moving Windows 10 to “end of life” status on October 14. While your computer will still function beyond that date, it will no longer receive automatic security updates, leaving it increasingly vulnerable to malware and cyber threats.

That gives users three main options to stay protected:

Upgrade to Windows 11 for free, if your PC meets compatibility requirements.

Purchase a new device with Windows 11 pre-installed—or switch to another platform like macOS or ChromeOS.

Stick with Windows 10 and enrol in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for another year of protection.

The last option is proving popular, especially since Microsoft now allows many users to get the ESU extension for free.

How to Enrol in Windows 10 Extended Security Updates

While Microsoft initially suggested the ESU plan would cost around $30 per year, users in the United States can now access it without paying a fee. Here’s how to set it up and keep your PC safe for another year.

Step 1: Update your PC
Go to Settings > System > About and check your version number. Install all available updates to ensure your system is up to date before proceeding.

Step 2: Use an administrator account
You must be signed in as an administrator to make these changes. Confirm this by checking under Settings > Your Info.

Step 3: Check Windows 11 eligibility
If your PC supports Windows 11, it’s best to upgrade now for continued long-term updates. If not, move on to the next step.

Step 4: Sign up for ESU
In Settings, select Update & Security, then look for the “Enroll Now” link under the Extended Security Updates section. If the option doesn’t appear, make sure you’ve installed all the latest Windows 10 updates first.

Step 5: Choose your upgrade method
You’ll be prompted to back up your PC as part of the enrolment. The free option includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage—more than enough if you disable larger folders like Documents, Pictures or Videos in Settings > OneDrive.

Once complete, click “Add this device to receive Extended Security Updates” and then Done. Congratulations—you’ve successfully enrolled.
