Wife Of Eastern Cape Farmer Charged With Conspiracy To Kill Husband For Inheritance
Anelle de Bruin, the wife of prominent Eastern Cape farmer Johan de Bruin, made her second appearance in Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
The 46-year-old is charged with conspiracy to murder her farmer husband, allegedly plotting his death to claim over R50 million in inheritance and insurance money

The alleged conspiracy, which involved staging Johan de Bruin’s death to appear as a farm attack, was uncovered after an investigation by local authorities.
Anelle de Bruin, who is also going through divorce proceedings, was arrested on 9 January 2025 at their Rietpoort farm, located about 30 km from Aliwal North.
Hitman Instructions And Outstanding Evidence
According to police reports, De Bruin was recorded instructing hitmen to kill the farmer; her husband and stage the scene to make it look like a robbery or farm attack.

She allegedly gave details about shooting the family’s dogs, damaging her husband’s vehicle, and timing the incident to ensure minimal response from neighboring farmers.
It is believed she stood to inherit millions from her husband’s death.
Court Appearance
During her court appearance, Magistrate Yiva Sithole postponed the trial until 23 April, citing incomplete evidence, including missing cellphone records, witness statements, and photo albums.

De Bruin’s bail was extended, and her conditions remain unchanged. She is prohibited from returning to the farm, and her children may only visit her under supervision.
De Bruin was previously granted bail of R2,000 when she first appeared in court on 17 January.
The case is still under investigation as authorities work to gather all necessary evidence.
